Tomoko Tudini

This restaurant was a part of a longer walk that we took around Rome, going from our hotel towards the central railway station and onwards to the beautiful Palazzo Delle Esposizioni. But before we went to see the wonderful photography of Gianni Berengo Gardin, we stopped over for lunch at the Tomoko Tudini restaurant. This place had a cozy terrace on the street with fans blowing for some relief in the high noon sun.

My wife had the Insalata Nizzarda (i.e. Salade niçoise, 11e) with fresh tuna, salad, olives and hard boiled eggs. The salad was lovely and the tuna was fresh and tasty with a nice char.

We also got some olive oil and balsamic for the bread. The bread was fresh and we went through the lot quite quickly while dipping it in the oil.

My son went for the pasta with ragú (10e). This was a very good version of it, with fresh pasta and a deeply delicious meat sauce.

Our older girl had the fish (close to 20e, I think), which was grilled whole and came like that to the table. The dish was quite spectacular, with the oven fried potatoes (in essence these were crisps/chips), but the whole fish did look a bit daunting to our girl.

Luckily the waiter asked if we wanted him to clean the fish and as we said yes, he took it apart in a quick manner and our daughter made a lovely feast of it. The fish was excellent and the chips were crispy.

I had a pizza (diavolo, if I recall correctly, approx. 10e) and I have to say that of all the pizza’s eaten while in Rome, this was clearly the best one I had. The crust was top notch and the tomato sauce tasted just wonderful. The oozing cheese and the slightly hot salami closed the deal for me, this was a very good and filling lunch.

The terrace was surprisingly nice and we had a great time just sitting here and relaxing after a long walk on the streets of Rome. The service was excellent and our waiter took care of everything with ease. The kids were also treated with care and all of us left the restaurant happy.

Pasticceria e Gelateria Rosi Bernardini

When we visited the Trattoria Pommidoro, we also had some gelato and sweets from this charming little pasticceria. There was an abundance of various cakes and sweets on offer and we had a bag of these to go, which we then devoured at the hotel.

The gelato was excellent as were the sweets. And the price range was very affordable, none of the price gauging seen in the more touristy areas of Rome.

The service from the lady behind the counter was charming and I most certainly recommend to try out some of the delicious things they have.

Trattoria Pommidoro

I got this app, Parla’s Rome, to browse interesting restaurants to visit while on our vacation. This Pommidoro restaurant was one of them, offering traditional Roman cuisine and some dishes which were slightly rarer to see in menus of other restaurants.

We started off with some antipasto (14e), which included olives, (strong) cheese and prosciutto, with the obligatory bread and olive oil.

The nibbles were quite good, high quality and I really liked them, although the cheese was slightly too much for the kids.

A little wine (they had their house wine in small bottles, which I found quaint) and bread, the antipasto and a warm summer breeze on the terrace, located at a charming little piazza.

This was a very lovely little dinner with the family. And the life on the piazza was interesting to look at, it really came to life during the early evening.

My wife had the spaghetti aglio e Olio (8e), which she so adores. She found the dish to be a bit too rustic, before she has got versions with slightly thinner pasta. It was good, but not the best she has had.

Our older daughter had the Spaghetti alla carbonara and she liked it ok, but was not enamored by it. Probably the ample antipasto had a play in this also. I felt that this was a good version of the dish.

Our son had the ragú, once more. This time it was with fettucine and he loved it. And I do have to say that this was rather good, after tasting it.

For some reason I went for the rabbit, i.e. the Coniglio alla Cacciatora (11e) and Cicoria (4e), probably because you rarely see rabbit on the menu. I found the meat to be rather dry, but well seasoned. The chicory side was ok.

The decor of the place was very typical and authentic for such a restaurant. The curved roof of the dining hall in the cellar was atmospheric and the doorways were filled with pictures of old guests, some of them famous.

The service was quick and attentive and we had a good time at the restaurant. The outside terrace was well suited for dining outside.

The area around the restaurant seemed to be busting at the seams during evening and I would guess that it would be well suited for going for a bar-hopping.
